Barbara Hicok

Photo of Barbara Hicok.

I was about 24 years when I sustained a traumatic brain injury. I fainted and fell on my head while running in the Chicago cold weather. Life has been very challenging since then. Some of the areas which have been difficult are time management, organization, and communication. Imposing as much structure in my life as I can has been very beneficial. Also the intellectual stimulation and structure of working -currently as a teacher-has helped me immensely. Some other things in my life which have helped and comforted me are: my faith, friendships, music and singing in choirs, spending time in nature, and exercising outdoors. I have experienced barriers in employment and getting hired for jobs.

I would like people in the community to know that we are like others - with God-given talents. Please don't judge us or put us down even though we may act a little differently. In addition, don't pass us over in hiring - we can still do a good job!

I love being outdoors in nature. I feel free and safe riding my recumbent trike. It's very stable, comfortable, and exhilarating. My dog and I love to ride together!
