A little over two years ago, when I was 49 years old, I was diagnosed with autoimmune NMDAR Encephalitis. The doctors said my body was attacking my brain. Encephalitis means swelling of the brain. NMDAR is very rare. One in a million people are diagnosed with this.

I also had two brain surgeries in the four months and have spent four months in the hospital.

Having a strong support from my family and close friends has helped me endure having to relearn all that I lost. Such as relearning to walk, talk and take care of myself again.

Having a brain injury has brought on a lot of change in my life. I have to take things much slower.

I also have learned to accept the things I cannot change.

Grandkids

Photographer: Sandra Corona

My grandchildren have been such strength for me. They have been a shining light through some very dark clouds. There unconditional love has motivated me in many ways.

One by one I was able to stop using the walker, the wheelchair and the other things that followed my home from my four month hospital stay. Every time I could stop using one of them, was a turning point in being more independent.

I have started painting terra cotta planters as a way of trying to express myself with color. I enjoy taking my time and finding the right designs.
