Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Program

This is a cooperative agreement with the Social Security Administration. CCCIL conducts a community-based benefits planning, assistance and outreach project that disseminates in formation regarding work incentives programs and related issues to people with disabilities who are eligible for such benefits. CCCIL provides education, training, and case services to persons with disabilities who wish to return to work without losing their benefits.

 

Office of the Patient Advocate (OPA)

Central Coast Center for Independent Living (CCCIL) serves Monterey County with the HMO Enrollee Regional Outreach and In formation Centers (HEROIC) project. The major purpose of CCCIL’s HEROIC proposal is to target the traditionally underserved HMO enrollees in our community. The major objectives of the project are to:

Housing Services for People with Disabilities (HSPD)

Through the provision of service coordination, advocacy, and in formation and referral services, consumers learn how to successfully navigate housing resources available to City of Salinas residents with disabilities. This project is funded by a Community Development Block Grant.

Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Workforce Education and Training (WE&T) Work Incentives Counseling

This is a cooperative agreement with Monterey County Behavioral Health Division. CCCIL will provide Independent Living, Work Incentives Counseling Activities and Peer Support Services to the clients, family members, payee representatives, and services providers of the Mental Health System. CCCIL will assist in the following areas: gather and analyze in formation pertinent to the benefits management plan; advise beneficiaries and their support teams regarding financial status before, during, and at the conclusion of benefits; aid with application for, or preparations of, documentation for various work incentive benefits; advocate on behalf of consumers with other agencies and programs; and provide in formation, referrals, and problem-solving support.

Cancer Education and Support Project for People with Cancer and Their Families
Juntos Podemos Enfrentar al Cancer

This project, funded by the Natividad Medical Foundation, provides education and group support for Spanish speaking patients diagnosed with any type of cancer and their families who reside in South Monterey County. The project will take place during summer 2008. The project consists of 1 ½ hour classes at two different locations in South County. The classes are based on key concepts that include: living well with cancer, healthy life styles, independent living skills, how to support a family member with cancer, planning for health needs and promoting access to community services.

Latinas with Disabilities Mammography Project (LDMP)

The pilot research project consisted of community-based research conducted by the University of California San Francisco and CCCIL. During 18 months, January 2007-June 2008, 95 Latina women with physical or sensory limitations/disabilities participated in a 2½ hour class on the value of mammography, cancer prevention, and strategies for working with medical providers to improve access to health and mammography screening services in the Salinas Valley. Classes were co-taught by a health educator and a promotora de salud (health promoter).

A group of local, state and national experts and consumers served the as the advisory committee. Members of the committee included representatives from: Clínica de Salud del Valle de Salinas, American Cancer Society, Poder Popular, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CA Department of Rehabilitation, Central Coast Alliance for Health, Office for Aging and Adult Services, Monterey County Health Department, Blind & Visually Impaired Center of Monterey County, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Service Center, Inc. and CCCIL consumers.

Classes were held at a variety of locations including: WomenCare/Entre Nosotras, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System Comprehensive Cancer Center, Partners for Peace, Central Coast Center for Independent Living-Salinas office, 5 community rooms at CHISPA housing units, Greenfield Library, Watsonville Senior Center, Dorothy's Place, Natividad Medical Center-Diabetes Education Center, Monterey County Childcare Resource and Referral agency, Alisal Healthy Start, Monterey County Office of Education-Migrant Education, San Ardo Elementary School, San Jerardo farm cooperative and El Sausal Middle School.

One of the highlights of the project was the Steps to Breast Health for Latinas conference held at the Salinas Community Center March 8, 2008. 61 Latinas from the community attended the event funded by the American Cancer Society and co-sponsored the CCCIL, the Central Cancer Society-Central Coast Counties Unit and Lideres Campesinas.
