Latinas with Disabilities Mammography Project (LDMP)

This pilot research project is community-based research being conducted by the University of California San Francisco and CCCIL. During 18 months, January 2007-June 2008, 100 Latina women with physical or sensory limitations/disabilities will participate in a class on the value of mammography, cancer prevention, and strategies for working with medical providers to improve access to health and mammography screening services in the Salinas Valley. Classes will be co-taught by a health educator and a promotora de salud (health promoter).

In addition to the classes, the project will provide assessment of accessibility in clinics to mammography services by women with disabilities. A report with recommendations to improve access will be prepared for each mammography site. A year later, the clinic will be re-assessed for accessibility to measure if access has changed.

A group of local, state and national experts and consumers serves the project as an advisory committee. Members of the committee include representatives from: Clínica de Salud del Valle de Salinas, American Cancer Society, Poder Popular, Alisal Healthy Start, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Rehabilitation, Central Coast Alliance for Health, Office for Aging and Adult Services, Blind & Visually Impaired Center of Monterey County and Deaf & Hard of Hearing Service Center, Inc. and consumers from CCCIL.
